Warren Miller (1921-1966) was both student and teacher at the University of Iowa, gaining his BA and MA at the university with a brief interruption due to his service in the US Army. After teaching for several semesters, Miller moved to NYC in 1949 and quickly became involved in the Communist Party, writing film reviews and short stories for Masses & Mainstream. Despite the growing tensions surrounding communism, Miller wrote a satire on McCarthyism called THE SLEEP OF REASON, which was published in London. Using the pseudonym Amanda Vail in 1957, LOVE ME LITTLE was published, followed in 1958 by THE WAY WE LIVE NOW, the first book by Miller published in the US under his own name. A stage adaptation of LOVE ME LITTLE was created for Broadway. To capitalize on momentum of a the play's opening, starring Joan Bennett, Little Brown announced the publication of the second Vail novel, THE BRIGHT YOUNG THINGS, for a date close to the show's premiere. But only days before the book's publication, the gossip column of the New York Times Book Review exposed Warren Miller as Amanda Vail. The reveal didn't seem to hinder Miller's success at all; THE COOL WORLD was released in 1959, adapted for the stage and made into a film; Miller's 90 MILES FROM HOME was published to critical acclaim and entered several printings due to popular demand. THE SIEGE OF HARLEM published in 1964 is a prescient satire of the black power movement. Miller wrote reviews and articles for Saturday Review, The Nation and Commonweal, and his own short stories appeared in Saturday Evening Post, an O. Henry Awards anthology, and Paris Review among others. In addition to the above, he also was the ghost writer of the novel, RETURN TO PEYTON PLACE, and co-wrote the play, LET'S GO STEADY, which was adapted into the musical, BYE BYE BIRDIE. Miller sadly died of lung cancer at 44.
Walter Michael Miller, Jr. (1923-1996) grew up in the American South. Miller enlisted in the Army Air Corps a month after Pearl Harbor. He spent much of World War II as a radio operator and gunner. It was his participation in the controversial raid on the Benedictine Abbey in Italy that led Miller to write his masterwork, A Canticle for Lebowitz, which won the 1961 Hugo Award for Best Novel. The award was his second, as Miller also won a Hugo Award for his short story “The Darfstellar” in 1955. In addition to these works, Miller published two collections of short stories, Conditionally Human and The View from the Stars.
Anita Mills (1941-2018) turned to writing in the mid-1980's after teaching for many years. Her highly acclaimed regency romance Lady of Fire led to an award filled career with over 25 novels. Her historical novels and regency short stories are ranked among the best in their respective genres.
